Hybrid Vehicles
Hybrid vehicles are easily among the greatest ventures made thus far by manufacturers into using alternative energies for ground-based transportation. Certainly, the ultimate goal is to transition into using
electric vehicles
or even vehicles that use hydrogen or water for fuel. But, for the longest time, makers and buyers of automobiles were uncertain about how we would make that big change. Welcome the hybrid vehicles! What are hybrids?Unlike all-electric (or pure electric) vehicles (EVs), a hybrid utilizes a combination of 2 different types of fuel all in one vehicle.
Whereas most of our vehicles built and used through the beginning of the 21st Century ran on petroleum, most hybrids use petroleum assisted by electric power (or some other fuel assist).Any vehicle that combines two or more sources of power that can directly or indirectly provide propulsion power is a hybrid. Most hybrid vehicles on the road right now are gasoline-electric hybrids.
Types of HybridsPHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) - The PHEV is a gasoline-electric hybrid with an upgraded, larger capacity Li-ion battery pack which is recharged with either a battery charger hooked into the electrical grid or the gasoline engine (only if required). Most of the hybrids we see on the road now fall into this category.
Hydraulic Hybrid - Hydraulic hybrids have an engine that charges a pressure accumulator, which in turn drives the wheels via hydraulic drive units.
Hybrid Fuel - Unlike some vehicles that use 2 different devices for propulsion, the hybrid fuel vehicles uses 2 different types of fuel in the same engine (Examples: Electric overhead and diesel, biofuel and gasoline, liquified petroleum gas and natural gas, human-powered and gasoline-powered).
BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) - The BEV maintains a constant connection to electrified rail, plates, or overhead wires. The battery is typically charged while connected to these sources (on the highway, etc.), and in the interim times when no connection can be made to these wires/rails (in areas where the connections are not available), the power from the battery is used to power the vehicle. |
