There is currently a big push to restructure the entire power industry. This move can probably be attributed to the Energy Policy Act of 1992, which resulted from the intent to provide customers with the freedom to choose their power provider.

The Energy Act decreased the regulation of utility companies and allowed competition to drive the build in the alternative energy field on a state-by-state basis here in the U.S.

The increased interest in green power from customers means they are more willing to pay a little more for green power than for traditional power generation (at least currently). This also means more job opportunities for all of us, as companies expand into the green power field.

Renewable energy jobs are now being created in a wide variety of professions. Although this can make it a little more challenging to find your niche in the professional field with renewable energy, it also means there are more opportunities for people (with different types of degrees and backgrounds) to get into this growing field.
